25th Annual Shrimp Boil Brings In $195,000 and Celebrates Co-Founder

As chair of the committee, Cheryl Cochran wanted a GIANT Shrimp Boil to support The Rose and provide more mammograms and diagnostic services than ever before. She asked for more tables, merchandise and desserts to be sold. She challenged the group to secure more and even better items for the silent and live auctions. Her hard work and persistence paid off when more than 1,000 guests walked through the doors of the Pasadena Convention Center and the event had raised more than $195,000. “We are indebted to Cheryl and the entire Committee for making this event exceptional!” said Dorothy Gibbons, CEO of The Rose. “We wanted a celebration reflective of the spirit of my friend and Co-Founder Dr. Dixie Melillo as we paid tribute to her many years of service to this community and we certainly got it! .

An emotional highpoint of the event occurred during the live auction when Ella Thomas’ “Waltz Across Texas” one-of-a-kind quilted wall hanging brought one of the highest single bids in the history of the Shrimp Boil -- $10,000. Obviously moved by their generosity, auctioneer Bear Hebert stopped the action to acknowledge designer Thomas, the generous financial contributor Scott Kraker, and the inspiration behind the Texas music theme – Judy Pareya and her late husband Joe, brother of Ella. Along with music by The Slags and DJ Forrest of Xceptional DJs, entertainment included the Kids Creative Zone designed and staffed by Bayou City Art Festival with assistance from members of the Speakers Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as well as the Associated Credit Union of Texas which also provided a Kids Meal.

Supporters of the event included Oates Industries, Inc. and Houston Methodist Hospital System, each contributing $10,000, and other sponsors United Airlines, Albemarle Foundation (Pasadena Plant); American Cargo Assurance, LLC & CGBM; Buffalo Flange, Inc.; ComedySportz Houston; Doug Perley & Eileen Campbell; Genetech; Patricia Krueger; Texas Citizens Bank; Trinet; and Painting with a Twist, La Marque. AmSpec underwrote the cost of the shrimp.
