Gather photos of what you like. Decide on a budget. Inventory what you already have to see what might fit. If remodeling or building is part of the process, definitely obtain plans/blueprints. Research registered designers preferably through ASID that have worked with the style you are wanting.

What do you see as the biggest mistakes made by amateur designers like myself?

Overkill, not knowing a space and many times the layout is incorrect. Understanding how to effectively use a budget, whether it be spending more on a specific item that would make a space or limiting the need of certain items.

Kitchens are generally the most often remodeled areas in the house. What trends do you see with modern kitchen design?

Glass mosaics for backslashes-especially geometric patterns,Stainless steel and quartz countertops- especially those that mimic onyx. Both have their efficiencies. Metal has the feel of a chef’s kitchen and both materials have the ease of cleaning.

Cabinets have clean simple lines with a lot of detail inside. So much is put into how the space and storage is used.

Appliances are also multi- functional and integrated with the cabinets. Stainless is still strong but black or white glass fronts are popular.

What techniques or ideas do you have for someone on a limited budget?

Modern design calls for very clean, unencumbered choices and placement. The old saying of “Less is more,” rings true in creating a modern aesthetic. Try not to finish everything all at once, it is better to map out what you need and spread out additions over a period of time.

What are your favorite wall and floor coverings?

Floor Covering: Porcelain tile, preferably European. Textures, sizes, colors and patterns are very consistent; unique, yet very easy to maintain.

Wall: Maya Romanoff Wall finishes are superb. Tile is also an excellent long term solution for wall finishes, specifically collections available through La Nova and the Porcelanosa Brand.
