Houston’s Original Outdoor Monthly Art Market turns 19 on March 4 in the Heights

Houston’s original monthly outdoor art market, First Saturday Arts Market, will celebrate 19 years, Saturday, March 4, 2023 from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. at 540 W. 19th St. in the Heights. Visitors to this free outdoor event, will find over 3 dozen friendly artists offering art in a variety of popular mediums. There is always a popular food truck on site and local singer/songwriters perform.

First Saturday Arts Market has been introducing both savvy and tentative art buyers to friendly artists since 2004. Visitors find friendly artists that love to talk about their art without pretense.

Participating artists assist in the selection process of new artists. Much like the jury process for festivals, First Saturday Arts Market artists score new applicants based on originality, quality and appropriateness.

The art mediums visitors will find at the anniversary market include pottery, photography, jewelry design, woodcraft, pen, pencil, lithograph, hand blown and fused glass. Painting mediums include watercolor, mixed media, collage, found object art, abstract, military/aviation, surreal/sci-fi, floral, landscape and figurative oil painting.

Insect lovers will even feel included with two options; watercolor painted specimens by Paul Atwell and professionally preserved insects, mounted and framed by Ruben Salazar.

This month the food truck will be Dibi Rapide, serving Senegalese food. The West African themed food truck is influenced by North African, French, and Portuguese cuisine.

Music for the 19th Anniversary celebration will be Americana style acoustic with a mix of country, rock, and blues. Al Shire of Austin kicks off the music sets with his originals at 1 p.m. then following at 2 p.m. the Wendy Elizabeth Jones Band steps up with David Odea on lead guitar, Alyson Fahl on keys and Kevin Crenshaw on drums.

Located at 540 W. 19th St. and open 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. September through May, a complete artist roster, map and galleries is on the website. https://firstsaturdayartsmarket.com/
