The Salvation Army of Greater Houston celebrated their 30th Annual Luncheon and it was an afternoon to remember! The luncheon was held at River Oaks Country Club and raised over $740,000. Bill Schneidau served as Luncheon Chair; Holly and Tom Forney were the Honorees, and special guest, Mr. Spencer Tillman, former NFL player for Houston Oilers and San Francisco 49ers, grew up attending The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma was the Keynote Speaker. “We were so pleased that Mr. Tillman agreed to serve as our keynote speaker for our luncheon,” said Vicki West, Chairman of the Advisory Board for The Salvation Army of Greater Houston. “Not only has Mr. Tillman achieved great success in business, but, more importantly, he has been a staunch supporter of countless charities across Houston, especially The Salvation Army.”
Honorees, Holly and Tom Forney delivered a powerful speech on starting over in life and the role God plays in helping us find our way through hard times, (received a standing ovation). The Forneys’ talked about their unwavering faith even when they experienced financial and personal hardships. They are true stewards of God and are personally committed to the mission of the army. Their unwavering support to The Salvation Army moved the entire room, reminding everyone in the audience of the power of compassion and resilience.
Mr. Tilman gave a powerful and inspirational speech reflecting on his own experiences with The Boys and Girls Club. He reflected on how the club helped shaped him as a young boy. Their program was instrumental in giving him structure and consistence. He reflected on having an afterschool outlet for young men was instrumental in keeping him out of trouble. It allowed him to be part of a community, helped shape him to achieve his goals and to dream big for the future, and to never give up.
This event not only allows the Houston community to come together to hear stories of lives transformed, but also raised important funds to support The Salvation Army of Greater Houston’s life-changing programs.
There were over 320 guests in attendance including: Mistress of Ceremonies Deborah Duncan, Joe and Cathy Cleary, Emily Clay, Majors Rob & Carolynn Webb, Dr. Walter and Linda McReynolds, Hannah McNair, Vicki West and Ralph Burch, Maureen Higdon, Chris & Diana DeLaup, Judy Tate, Jenny Elkins, Rose Cullen, Joyce Standish, Lilly and Thurmon Andress.
