Texas Medical Center’s Helix Park
The leaders at the Texas Medical Center (TMC) had a vision: Build a life sciences campus capable of attracting the world’s brightest research to Houston.
With Helix Park, they have taken a significant step toward achieveing their goal.
The 37-acre site, which opened Octoer 2023, places top translational researchers alongside business enterprises to rapidly advance and commercialize life science research. And all the magic will happen with an open door to the greater Houston community.
The first building to open in Helix Park is the TMC3 Collaborative Building, financed by TMC, Texas A&M University Health Science Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and the University of Texas Health Science Center.
“The Collaborative Building represents an evolution from a mindset of ‘mine’ to a mindset of ‘ours.'” said Bill McKeon, Texas Medical Center President and CEO, “with the four founding institutions sharing space, which is something they’ve never done.”
“There’s a hope that this becomes a destination for people to come have dinner, bring their kids,” said landscape architect Mikyoung Kim, “… and then also a place where outdoor collaboration happens for the peopls doing the valuable reseach within the buildings.”
Furthermore, every Helix Park building is open to the public. “You can go in and use the bathroom or change your baby — we really want to embrace a different dialogue with the public, to share with them the innovations happening within this medical center,” McKeon continued. “It’s a complete seismic shift.”
