Houston Classical Charter School hit a high note with their recent 2nd annual Foundational Dinner at The Goodman. Kristin and Raul Abello chaired the festive sold-out affair; Honorary Chairs, Dr. Julie and Eric Kuo and Jessica and Brian Leeke; Auction Chairs were Jordan and Dylan Seff. The event raised more than $1,750,000 which will help to expand Houston Classical Charter School’s campus so that we can serve hundreds more deserving, low-income scholars.
Highlights of the live auction were a signed Taylor Swift guitar, two tickets to her concert in New Orleans, an unforgettable journey to the sun-kissed shores of Puerto Vallarta for 17 at Villa Alexa, and a Hill Country getaway with a James Beard-nominated chef.
The evening highlights were testimonials from Deyvis Salazar, HCCS Founder, Alana Leek, HCCS parent, and Joe Greenberg and Mark Gregg, HCCS supporters. Salazar emphasized that the school’s growth “is not merely for the sake of expansion. We are not aiming to become a network of 20 schools; On the contrary, we strive to maintain intimate connections with our families. Rather, we are committed to knowing each child and family who walks through our doors.” Leek shared that her two young boys attend HCCS and she loves the school because “the teachers and staff at Houston Classical focus on my kids’ learning and create individualized plans to meet their needs. It’s been amazing to see both of them excel in their reading and using sight words.”
Capping off the evening, Greenberg and Gregg announced they would match all gifts during the event up to $200,000. Attendees rose to the occasion on behalf of scholars and gave more than $900,000 to secure the match.
Houston Classical Charter School, located in Alief, provides free education to scholars currently in grades PreK-5th grade and will eventually increase enrollment to serve PreK-8th grade. 80% of families enrolled at Houston Classical live at or below the poverty line. Houston Classical provides structured curriculum to help develop critical thinkers. Houston Classical is publicly supported by the Brown Foundation, Houston Endowment, Charter School Growth Fund, and the Charter Seed Fund.
